The Form:
Author(s). Date of publication. Title [Internet]. Edition.
Place of publication: publisher; [Date e-book viewed].

How to Cite Generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Bard, etc.) in CSE Style

Generative AI

The Council of Science Editors recommends treating AI-generated content as personal communication. The recommendation for personal communication is:

  • Cite personal communication in-text only 
  • Do not include in the References section
  • Include a description of the content that was created or edited and the name of the language model or tool, version and extension numbers, and manufacturer

Example: I asked it to respond to a prompt to "write a 100 word summary on nuclear energy" (ChatGPT [OpenAI], response to question from author, 6 September 2023).
