Breaking The Big 8 research model into steps is an easy way to incorporate information literacy into the American Language Program reading classes. For example, if students are reading about American education, the instructor can create a library assignment in which students practice a part or all of The Big 8. Alternatively, if students are reading a novel in their class, they may be asked to do research about the author, the book, or the characters. As students progress through the program, they are expected to search various library databases using a variety of research tools, learn to identify and define research topics, start to evaluate sources, and begin to think critically about their resources in order to decide if the information is relevant and appropriate for their needs. Upon graduating from the ALP, students will have completed all the steps in a research project and will be able to apply their knowledge of research and information literacy in the Composition classroom.
The SUNY Purchase College Library has created a bank of assignments that address information and research skills. They range from simple, short exercises to complex research assignments. They have extended an invitation to the BCC Library to join their efforts.
