Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What devices does the Library have? Who can use them?
A: The Library has iPads, Samsung Galaxy tablets, Nook HD e-readers and Kindle Fire HD e-readers that are available for students to use on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Devices are available at the Paramus and Meadowlands campuses. 

Q: How long can I check out each device? Can I take them home?
A: The iPads and Samsung Galaxy tablets can be checked out for a period of 3 hours for Library use only. The Nook Color and Kindle Fire e-readers can be checked out for a period of two weeks (14 days). 

Q: What can I do with them?
A: The Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD e-readers can be used to read e-books and other materials. They have been loaded with a selection of classic books, and can also be used to read e-books offered by the Library. The iPads and Samsung Galaxy tablets can be used for a variety of purposes. They have been loaded with apps that will help BCC students succeed in their coursework. Some of the apps were suggested by BCC students. Many of the Library’s databases can also be accessed from these tablets.

Q: How can I check out a device?
A: You must have your current BCC Student ID Card to check out one of these devices. You also must fill out the required Portable Electronic Device Lending Agreement form when you check out the device. 

Q: Where can I check out the devices?
A: You can check out these devices from Library Media Services, Monday - Friday. You can also inquire at the Service Desk, where staff will direct you to the right place.

Q: How many devices can I check out?
A: You can only check out one device at any given time.

Q: What happens if I return the device late?
A: There is a $10/hour late fee for the iPads and Samsung Galaxy tablets, and a $10/day late fee for the Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD e-readers. Overdue or lost items will result in a hold on the student's record until the fine is resolved. 

Q: What happens if I damage or lose the device?
A: If the device is damaged or lost, you will be charged a replacement fee which includes a processing fee.  Lost items will result in a hold on the student's record until the fine is resolved. The replacement cost of each device is noted on the Portable Electronic Device Lending Agreement form that will be completed at the time of checkout. 

Q: How can I access e-books?
A: 
Some e-books have been pre-loaded on each device. You will find an icon to access these titles on each device. Additional e-books can be accessed on the library catalog.

Q: Can I print from any of the devices?
A: No, the devices do not support printing.

Q: Can I save anything to the devices?
A: You cannot save directly to the devices. However, you can save files to your flash drive from the Samsung Galaxy tablets (a Samsung USB connector is available for checkout). For the other devices, you can save your files to the Cloud, or create and save them using Google Docs.  

Q: Can I download apps?
A: 
No apps can be downloaded to any devices.  If there is an app you think should be on any device, please let the library staff know, or write it on the feedback card.

Q: Can I borrow a power cord?
A:  Yes. A power cord and power adaptor for Nook HD or Kindle Fire HD may be requested at the time of checkout.  iPad and Samsung Galaxy are lent fully charged, and you may not need the power cord.

Q: I'm a staff/faculty member. Can I borrow one of the tablets/ereaders?
A: Staff or faculty members can borrow electronic devices if they are currently enrolled in a course taught at BCC.
