Go Ask Alice – An anonymous health question and answer service provided by Columbia University’s Health Education Program.

Healthfinder - Guide to the best government and nonprofit health information on the Web.

HIV InSite - Comprehensive information on HIV/AIDS.

Mayo Clinic - Good consumer health site from the respected Mayo Clinic.

Medline Plus - Excellent consumer health site created by the National Library of Medicine.

Merck Manuals - Searchable full-text online medical reference books: both the home and professional versions of the basic Merck Manual and the Merck Manual of Geriatrics.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine - The U.S. government’s alternative health Web site.

PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) - Basic source of drug information.

Website Evaluation Strategies

Authority

  • Is there an author?
  • Is there information about the author or sponsoring information?
  • What is the domain? (.com= commercial, .gov=government, .org=nonprofit organization, .edu=educational institution)

Accuracy

  • How does the information compare to information from other sources?
  • is the text grammatical?
  • Are there spelling errors?

Currency

  • Is the date of creation or last update given?
  • Are the links active?

Content

  • What is the purpose of the site? Can you tell?

Objectivity

  • If the site deals with controversial issues, is the viewpoint clearly stated?
