Article 3, paragraph (a) of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Personsdefines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs

Step 1:

U.S. Department of State's 2024Trafficking in Persons Report  (TIP Report) report gives comprehensive information on each country, their tier for human trafficking, recommendations, prosecution, and prevention.
To use this resource you will go to your country narrative.  A drop-down menu is on the right-hand side of the webpage.  Below are links to other sections you will utilize:

First: 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report

  1. Follow the above link
  2. Choose the country you will research (on the right "location")
  3. After you have read and understand the Trafficking in Persons Report for your country, you are ready to move on.

Step #2: United Nations: Global Report on Trafficking in Persons

The ONODC report Global Report on the Trafficking in Persons, 2022

  • Regional Overviews begin on Page 75; look up the region that your country is located
  • Understand what type of trafficking takes place in that region from the texts, charts, and graphs
  • Also have an understanding of whether the trafficking is primarily within the country or to other countries

Regional reports can be accessed towards the bottom of the page.

 

Step #3: Proquest Research Library

Proquest Central - take the following steps to format your search    

  1. From the Library's Home Page: www.bergen.edu/library
  2. Click on Proquest Research Library
  3. In the first box, type in your Country
  4. In the next box, enter the Type of Trafficking you are researching (ex. child labor or migrant workers) Remember labor can be spelled labor or labour
  5. Now click "Search"

Once you have your results you can refine them by doing some of the following:

  • Source Type- Choose "Magazines" or "Newspapers" to view reporting and analysis; click "More Options" to select more than one source type
  • Publication Date - use the bars to select items within a specific date range
  • Document Type - Select a specific type of document, reports are often helpful for this assignment
