The instructions on this page will guide you through how to search for articles for your Special Needs Journal Assignment.

Contact Prof. Dalrymple if you need more help.

Guided Instructions for Searching

Step 1:  Go to the Dental Hygiene Research Guide ("Start Here" tab of this guide):

https://bergen.libguides.com/dental

You may need general information about the condition.  In the box called Health / Medical Databases, click on Health Reference Center Academic and search for your condition.  If you find an article here and you use it in your project, be sure to cite it in APA style: click on “Citation” and choose “APA” and it will generate a citation. Copy and paste it into your “References” list.

Step 2:  Search for articles about your topic in the journal called Dimensions of Dental Hygiene: The Journal of Professional Excellence.

This is one of the foundational journals of your profession so it is important to become familiar with it:

 https://dimensionsofdentalhygiene.com/issue-archive/

Search for articles about your topic by clicking on the search icon (a magnifying glass) in the upper right corner of the page.

Generally we use articles that are not older than 5 years, but sometimes the information is still valid. Check with Dr. Duddy if you are not sure.

Step 3:  Next, you will need articles from Pubmed.

Click on the Articles tab of the Dental Hygiene Research Guide (this guide).

In the box called Databases for Peer-Reviewed and Scholarly Journal Articles, click on Pubmed.

(Pubmed direct link:  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

In Pubmed, you can limit to Free Full Text and articles from the last 5 years.

Put your topic or related keywords in the search box and add terms such as "oral care"

For example:

sleep apnea oral care

Note that you need to use words, not phrases or sentences.  Take a look at the results and refine your search if necessary by adding or changing the keywords you put in the search box.

You may also want to try terms like “periodontal” or “oral health” or “dental hygiene” or “dental management” in addition to your topic.

For example:

sleep disorders dental management

When you find the article you want, click on “cite” and choose “APA”. Copy and paste the citation into your page called “References.” (or “Reference” if you have only 1 reference.)

Step 4:  You can also try other databases such as Science Direct and CINAHL. (see the research guide for other databases: https://bergen.libguides.com/dental/articles

You may have learned something specific about the condition that you want to explore further, so you can get keyword ideas from that too.

Please explore Pubmed and the other databases and let me know if you need further assistance.
